Hello all supporters of NFABC We had an amazing conversation with Patrick Condon last night about “Why housing is so expensive?” Please share to anyone who has concerns about the current cost of housing. Mr. Condon reflected on his extensive career shaping Vancouver's landscape, with the goal of boosting housing supply and improving affordability. Over the decades, he succeeded in increasing the number of homes, but the results fell short of his vision: the new housing largely catered to the wealthiest buyers, leaving affordability out of reach for most. Vancouver became a 40-year case study, proving that more construction doesn’t always translate to accessible housing for all. If you don’t know who Patrick Condon is I will share my introduction. Patrick Condon is a distinguished urban planner, educator, and author renowned for his insightful contributions to sustainable urban design and city planning. With over four decades of experience, he has dedicated his career to addressing the pressing challenges facing modern cities, blending practical expertise with academic rigor. Condon serves as a professor at the University of British Columbia’s School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, where he has taught since 1992, shaping the next generation of urban thinkers. His extensive body of work includes several acclaimed books, such as Seven Rules for Sustainable Communities and Five Rules for Tomorrow’s Cities, which reflect his commitment to fostering livable, equitable urban environments. In his latest book, Broken City: Land Speculation, Inequality, and Urban Crisis, Condon tackles the global housing crisis, arguing that the commodification of land as an asset rather than a utility lies at the heart of skyrocketing urban land prices and deepening inequality.
