Proposition D protections
In 1972, 80 percent of coastal citizens and 64 percent of all San Diego voters, approved Proposition D. They did so to protect San Diego from becoming another Miami Beach, where rows of high-rises line the shorelines.
I recognize that San Diego needs more housing. But let’s provide that housing in a way that doesn’t destroy what makes San Diego so special. For virtually all San Diegans, that means coming to our coastal communities to enjoy our greatest attraction – the ocean. San Diegans are so blessed to be able to see the ocean, to feel its breezes, and to have easy beach access for free days of enjoyment. Please don’t take that away by allowing this high-rise and the others that surely will follow.
Some 52 years ago when Prop D passed overwhelmingly, developers legally challenged the right of citizens to pass such an initiative. The fight reached all the way to the United States Supreme Court. Ultimately, we voters prevailed.
Now, we see state government attempting to override our rights. And, we see the first fruit of the state’s effort – a misplaced 23-story high-rise with 139 hotel units, multi-million-dollar luxury condos, and only five affordable housing units. Please oppose this blatant slap in the face to voters, to those seeking affordable housing, and to all San Diegans.
Thank you.
